CANTON, Mich. — Plymouth High School, whose Wildcats play home games in Canton, heads into the last week of the regular season holding a Division 1 playoff spot, but only just, and its final test comes Friday night at Dearborn.
Plymouth is 28th in the latest Division 1 standings with a playoff point average of 51.750. The state association uses those averages, now in their sixth season, to fill each bracket, and only the top 32 teams in Divisions 1 through 8 earn a postseason berth.
The margin above the cut line is thin. The first team outside the field, New Baltimore Anchor Bay, sits about five points behind the Wildcats, and Friday is the last chance for anyone to move.
Plymouth stands at .500 after a bumpy October. The Wildcats lost 43-37 to Crestwood on Oct. 2, bounced back with a 55-30 win at Novi on Oct. 9, then fell 48-14 to Belleville on Oct. 16. Belleville is 17th in the same standings.
The finale doubles as a bubble showdown. Dearborn also has a .500 record and is 29th, right behind Plymouth, with a 49.875 average. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Dearborn High School in a non-conference game.
Earlier this fall the Wildcats also dropped a 49-14 decision to Northville, which is eighth in the Division 1 field.
