A residential street in fall

PLYMOUTH, Mich. — Rakes out, Plymouth. The city’s free curbside bulk leaf pickup starts the week of Oct. 19, and every neighborhood gets two turns between now and early December.

The city splits town into four zones using Ann Arbor Trail, Main Street and the CSX railroad tracks. Area A, north of Ann Arbor Trail and west of the tracks, goes first, the week of Oct. 19, with a second round the week of Nov. 16.

Area B, north of Ann Arbor Trail and east of the tracks, follows the weeks of Oct. 26 and Nov. 23. South of Ann Arbor Trail, Area C west of Main Street is set for Nov. 2 and Nov. 30, and Area D east of Main gets Nov. 9 and Dec. 7. Piles need to be at the curb by 7 a.m. Monday of your week, and crews need to be able to reach them from the street.

Any resident or business in the city can use the service at no charge. A mailer with the color-coded map went out this month, and the city also puts up signs as reminders. Plymouth’s municipal services department says upward of 5,000 cubic yards of leaves pile up in town each fall.

To keep pickup quick and safe, park away from leaf piles because a hot exhaust can ignite them, and keep leaves off storm drains so streets do not flood. Grass, small branches, pumpkins, dirt and rocks belong in a Kraft bag or compost can instead, and brush for chipping should go in its own pile. Questions go to municipal services at 734-453-7737.
