Character

Old Village has a distinctly different character from Plymouth's polished downtown — more bohemian, eclectic, and walkable. The housing stock consists primarily of early-20th-century bungalows and craftsman homes on narrow lots with front porches. The commercial stretch along Liberty Street features a railroad-themed restaurant, a brewpub, a fish market, a gourmet pastry shop, and specialty shops. It's the neighborhood Plymouth residents describe as having the 'real Plymouth character.'

History

Old Village was one of Plymouth's original residential expansions in the late 19th century. The community developed around the railroad line and the various industries and mills that defined early Plymouth. William Starkweather, one of Plymouth's founders, owned land in this area. The neighborhood's Old Village commercial strip evolved organically around the railroad era and has maintained its distinctive character through careful preservation by residents and business owners.
