They initially took the lead in the first inning, but the Ducks rallied back with crucial hits and solid pitching. Oregon advanced further in the tournament with this win, showcasing their strength throughout the season.

Omaha, Nebraska – Michigan State baseball concluded its 2025 season with a 4-2 loss to the top-seeded Oregon Ducks in the Big Ten tournament on May 22, 2025. The Spartans, who entered the tournament as the 12th seed, ended their season with a record of 28 wins and 27 losses after they were eliminated following two losses in round-robin pool play.

In the match against Oregon, Michigan State struck first with an early run in the top of the first inning. Ryan McKay opened the scoring with a double and later crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly executed by Sam Busch, giving the Spartans a 1-0 advantage. However, the Ducks quickly responded, taking the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Anson Aroz hit a two-out double that drove in two runs, changing the score to 2-1 in favor of Oregon.

Michigan State managed to tie the game at 2-2 in the seventh inning. A series of defensive errors by the Ducks resulted in Parker Picot scoring. Nevertheless, Oregon regained the lead shortly after. In the bottom of the seventh, back-to-back RBI singles from Drew Smith and Aroz brought the score to 4-2, sealing the victory for the Ducks.

Aroz was the standout player for Oregon, completing the game with a 3 for 4 batting performance and three RBIs. He played a crucial role in his team’s offensive success. On the mound, Oregon’s pitcher Ian Umlandt impressed with an outing of 6 2/3 innings in which he allowed only one earned run and struck out five batters. Santiago Garcia was credited with the win while Seth Mattox secured an eighth save by closing the game with a perfect ninth inning.

With this victory, Oregon improved its season record to 42 wins and 13 losses. The Ducks ultimately advanced in the tournament and are scheduled to face eighth-seeded Nebraska for a chance to reach the semifinals. The winner of that matchup is set to face Oregon on May 24.

Michigan State’s performance this season, while showing moments of promise, ultimately ended with two losses in the Big Ten tournament. Oregon, under the leadership of coach Mark Wasikowski, has demonstrated strength throughout the season, culminating in Wasikowski being recognized as the Big Ten Conference coach of the year.

The conclusion of the season for Michigan State marks an opportunity for reflection as the team prepares for future seasons with aspirations of improving their standing and performance in upcoming tournaments.
