Canton Township Unveils New Mural Featuring Poetry

New mural in Canton Township Heritage Park featuring poetry

News Summary

Canton Township has launched a new mural in Heritage Park, blending local artistry with poetry from UK poet James McInerney. This mural aims to inspire positivity among passersby. The initiative follows controversy over the removal of a previous iconic postcard-style mural, leading to public outcry. Despite its criticism, local officials are committed to fostering community engagement through art, while exploring new mural opportunities and revisions to city mural codes.

Canton Township has unveiled a new mural in Heritage Park, integrating poetry and local artistry as part of its second collaboration with the Poetry Project. The mural, which features an inspiring quote from UK-based poet James McInerney, is located on the exterior wall of a restroom building on the park’s south side. McInerney’s quote reads, “Always be kind to everyone you meet and remember that flowers bloom when the sun shines. They open up because they trust its warmth; people do too.” This initiative aims to encourage passersby to pause and reflect on its positive message, as outlined by officials who described the mural as a vibrant fusion of spoken word and mixed media, brought to life by local artist John Hicks.

The unveiling of the mural comes amidst controversy surrounding the recent removal of a beloved postcard-style mural known as Greetings from Canton. This mural, which was installed in 2015 by photographer Lisa Beggs and muralist Victor Ving, adorned the former Buzzbin building and depicted various landmarks and notable residents of Canton. Measuring 14 feet by 25 feet, the mural had become an iconic representation of the township’s culture and community pride. The abrupt removal took many residents and city leaders by surprise, leading to significant public backlash.

Victor Ving, one of the original creators of the Greetings from Canton mural, was reportedly unaware of its removal and expressed disappointment regarding the decision. He remarked that the mural held special significance as one of the duo’s first projects outside New York. Since the mural’s removal, the new owner of the Buzzbin building, Eric Evans, has expressed his intent to work with Ving on a new mural for the establishment and plans to repaint it before his business’s grand opening.

In response to community demand for a new mural, Canton city officials are actively searching for a suitable location for a similar postcard-style piece. Planning Director Donn Angus highlighted that the city aims to ensure any new installation will be placed on a publicly owned structure. Currently, an estimated budget of around $20,000 has been proposed for the completion of this new mural.

In addition to the ongoing mural initiatives, the Canton City Council is contemplating revisions to the city’s mural code, which would provide clearer guidelines regarding acceptable locations, design requirements, and maintenance for future murals. A public hearing on the anticipated changes to the mural code is scheduled for 7 p.m. on August 7 at the Canton City Council chambers, giving residents an opportunity to voice their perspectives on the matter.

While the new mural at Heritage Park aims to beautify the township and foster community engagement through art and positive messages, the removal of the previous mural raises questions about the preservation of community identity through public art. With multiple mural initiatives and planned discussions on future policies, Canton Township appears committed to balancing artistic expression with community sentiments.
