A security team at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan, thwarted an armed gunman during a Sunday service, preventing mass casualties. The shooter, known to have no prior ties to the church, began firing into the congregation of 150, injuring a security guard. Church staff responded swiftly, returning fire and fatally striking the assailant. Local authorities are investigating the shooter’s motives and mental health crisis, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures in houses of worship.

Wayne, Michigan – A security team successfully neutralized an armed gunman during a Sunday service at CrossPointe Community Church, preventing what could have been a mass casualty event. The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. as approximately 150 congregants participated in a vacation Bible School service.

The shooter, a 31-year-old man from Romulus, Michigan, was not known to have any prior connection to the church community. Witnesses reported observing him driving erratically outside the church moments before the shooting began. The suspect exited his vehicle wearing a tactical vest and was armed with both a long gun and a handgun.

Witness accounts indicate that the gunman began firing into the church, injuring a security guard with a gunshot wound to the leg, which was later classified as non-life-threatening. In the face of immediate danger, church staff members quickly took action to confront and disarm the shooter. A parishioner also intervened by hitting the gunman with a vehicle while the shooter fired multiple shots at the car.

In a decisive response, at least two church staff members returned fire and fatally shot the assailant, ultimately stopping the attack. The prompt and courageous actions of the staff have been credited with preventing further casualties and ensuring the safety of those inside the church.

Police Chief Ryan Strong described the suspect as a would-be mass shooter and commended the heroic efforts of the church staff. Initial assessments indicated that the gunman was likely experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident.

Investigative efforts are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack, and local authorities are exploring the suspect’s background. Although his past interactions with police were limited, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is currently providing assistance and support to local law enforcement as they investigate the situation further.

A video livestream captured the chaotic scenes occurring inside the church as worshippers attempted to take cover during the gunfire. Reports indicate widespread panic, with many people fleeing and searching for safety amidst the unfolding violence.

Following the incident, church leadership expressed immense gratitude for their preparedness and security protocols, which had been established in response to previous violent incidents in places of worship. Local officials are now assessing various measures to enhance the safety of houses of worship in the community to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

In summary, the rapid and decisive actions taken by church staff and security teams significantly mitigated the potential for a tragic event, showcasing the importance of preparedness in the face of unexpected threats.
