COLUMBUS, Ohio — Michigan State could not find a way past the Ohio State defense on Friday afternoon, falling 4-0 to the Buckeyes in a Big Ten field hockey game at Buckeye Varsity Field.

The Spartans had their best looks in the opening minutes. Junior midfielder Lilian Knorr inserted back-to-back penalty corners, senior back Natalie Arnold had a drive blocked in the fourth minute, and sophomore midfielder Ellie Kendall put a shot on frame in the fifth minute that Ohio State goalkeeper Katie Fichtner turned away. That was the only Michigan State shot on goal all afternoon.

Ohio State took over in the second quarter. Sienna Golden broke the scoreless tie at 18:04 after stopping a Spartan clearing attempt, and Philippa Schipper redirected a Phillippa Jowett pass on a penalty corner at 26:28 to make it 2-0.

Spartan junior goalkeeper Lola Munoz de Verger kept her team within reach through the third quarter, making four saves, three of them on penalty corners, before Lea DeWan buried a rebound in the 44th minute. Emily Barker finished a feed from Anne Marie Krebs in the 55th minute for the final margin.

Ohio State outshot Michigan State 14-4, put nine shots on goal to one and had six penalty corners to two. Munoz de Verger finished with five saves over the full 60 minutes. It was the third shutout of the season for the Buckeyes, who are now 29-9 all-time against the Spartans.

The loss leaves Michigan State 5-11 on the season and winless in eight Big Ten games at 0-8. The Spartans wrap up the season at home on Sunday, Oct. 25, against Bellarmine at Ralph Young Field, with play set for noon.
