Unsigned Flock Camera Texts Hit Plymouth-Canton School Board Race

PLYMOUTH, Mich. — Voters in the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools district have been getting unsigned text messages that wrongly link school board candidates to Flock surveillance cameras, less than two weeks before the Nov. 3 election.

Candidates Joe Tollefson and Craig Olzak were among those named. Both said the cameras have never been part of their campaigns or a matter before the board. Flock Safety, the company that makes the cameras, said it has no tie to the messages.

The texts did not say who paid for them, even though Michigan law requires political ads to carry that disclosure. They came from numbers with Atlanta-area codes. Similar messages reached candidates in Novi, Ann Arbor, Troy and other districts, many of them endorsed by the Michigan Education Association, whose spokesperson called the texts disinformation.

Three full-term seats are open on the Plymouth-Canton board this fall, and voters may pick up to three. Olzak, Tollefson and Aamina Ahmed are running together as a slate, with Dan Lemieux also on the ballot. A separate partial-term seat is also up.
