Mendon Community Mourning the Loss of Esteemed Veterans and Respected Family Members

Mendon, MI—The Mendon community is deeply grieving following the recent passing of several cherished residents, particularly veterans who served their country with honor. Among those remembered are Steven R. Gary, Daniel Gerald Maurice, Jacob Dryden Wight, and David L. Sheets, Jr., who each left a unique imprint on the lives they touched.

Steven R. Gary, 77

Steven R. Gary of Mendon passed away on May 21, 2025, at Edgewood Health and Rehab in Three Rivers, MI. Born on October 20, 1946, in Three Rivers, Steve was the son of Russell and Anna (Brown) Gary. He graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1964 and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, embodying the motto “Once a Marine, always a Marine.”

Steve was an active member of the St. Joseph County Area Marine Corps League, contributing substantially to community efforts such as Toys for Tots and supporting local food banks. Known for his engaging personality, he enjoyed conversations with everyone he met. Steve loved to travel with family throughout the U.S. and visited Germany and Mexico. He cherished family road trips in his Plymouth Prowler, and was committed to his family, particularly his grandchildren.

Survived by his wife Helga Cook, two children, Sonja (Doyle) Hunter and Nathan (Jennifer) Gary, and four grandchildren, Steve also leaves behind two stepchildren and numerous friends and fellow veterans. His sister Gloria Gary-Smith mourns his loss, as does the community. In line with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a graveside service with military honors is scheduled for July 12, 2025, at Vicksburg Cemetery.

Daniel Gerald Maurice, 65

Daniel Gerald Maurice, originally from Hudson, MA, passed away suddenly on November 17, 2024. Living in Mendon at the time of his death, Dan was the son of the late Gerald and Muriel (Cummings) Maurice. He is survived by his wife Susan (Short) and several siblings, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Dan graduated from Algonquin Regional High School in 1977 and pursued further education at Quinsigamond Community College. A passionate car enthusiast, he imitated his father’s work ethic by focusing on auto mechanics. Following his recent retirement, Dan loved spending time fishing and enjoying the outdoors with his beloved pets, Snowball and Princess. Family camping trips were treasured moments for him.

A memorial service for Dan is scheduled for December 6, 2024, with a private burial afterward. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to donate to a cancer charity or the ALS Association.

Jacob Dryden Wight, 1977–2025

Jacob Dryden Wight, a compassionate father and partner, passed away recently at the age of 47. Born in Eugene, Oregon, he faced several challenges during childhood, including early deafness, but experienced miraculous healing. Jacob lived in various locations due to his father’s military service and ultimately graduated high school in Columbus, GA.

Jacob had three children with his first wife and four more with his partner, Stephanie. He dedicated his career to helping others, particularly as a tow truck driver. He is survived by his mother, siblings, partner, and children. A funeral service will be held on January 11, 2025, at the Mendon LDS Meeting House, followed by interment at Mendon City Cemetery.

David L. “Dave” Sheets, Jr., 79

David L. Sheets, Jr. of Mendon, Ohio, passed away on April 7, 2025, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on November 13, 1945, to the late David L. Sheets, Sr. and Bernice (Kendall) Sheets. A lifelong Mendon resident, he enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 57 years with B. Diane (Mihm) Sheets.

Dave had a successful career as a farmer and owner/operator of Sheets Bulldozing for over 50 years, often working closely with his father and enjoying running machinery. He had a passion for collecting and restoring tractors. A devoted family man, he loved spending time with his grandsons and welcoming stray dogs into his home. Dave is survived by his wife, son, and two grandsons.

Friends are invited to pay their respects on April 10, 2025, before a graveside service at Riverside Cemetery. The Mendon community remembers these individuals not only for their achievements but also for their profound connections to family and friends, and the legacy of love and dedication they leave behind.
