CANTON, Mich. — Canton Township Supervisor Anne Marie Graham-Hudak told residents Thursday that children are safe after a federal immigration operation near Hulsing Elementary School ended with five people in custody and the school sheltering in place.
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson said agents approached six people, who fled on foot in the direction of the school. Five were taken into custody, one of them already under a final order of removal. The arrests took place about a quarter mile from campus, and no agent went onto school grounds or inside the building, the agency said.
Hulsing sits between Morton Taylor and Lilley roads. Canton police secured the school for a little more than an hour that morning, and the township police department and the Plymouth-Canton Community School District both said they had no advance word of the operation.
In her statement posted Thursday, Graham-Hudak thanked the Canton Police Department and the district for their response. She asked residents not to confront or get in the way of federal agents and to report what they see to Canton police instead.
U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell said earlier in the week that she had contacted ICE, which acknowledged problems with how the operation was carried out.
