ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan has settled on its quarterback for Saturday’s noon game against Indiana, but coach Kyle Whittingham is not telling anyone who it is. At his Monday news conference he said the staff reached its decision late Sunday night after the usual film sessions and has a plan in place, but he would not give the Hoosiers a preview.
The question opened up during Saturday’s 21-18 win over Penn State. Sophomore captain Bryce Underwood was pulled at halftime after throwing two interceptions in the first half, which brought his turnover total for the season to eight. Freshman Tommy Carr took over and steadied the offense, completing 5 of 7 passes for 43 yards and adding 36 yards and a touchdown on four carries. The Michigan defense did its part with three takeaways, which flipped the turnover battle.
Whittingham said he liked what he saw from Carr in the second half. Asked about splitting snaps between the two, he said a two-quarterback rotation has never been something he favors, recalling the old line that a team with two quarterbacks really has none.
He also pushed back on the idea that money plays a role. Underwood arrived from Belleville with a name, image and likeness deal reported at about $3 million a season, and Whittingham said what a player is paid or what outsiders want has zero bearing on who plays, adding that coaches who chase outside noise soon find themselves out of work.
