ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Two Big Ten heavyweights with zero conference wins between them meet Saturday afternoon, when Michigan welcomes Penn State to Michigan Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff in front of a national television audience.
The Wolverines enter at 3-2 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Nittany Lions are 3-3 and 0-3. Something has to give, and the winner gets a needed lift for the second half of the season.
Michigan has leaned on defense. The Wolverines rank third in the country in total defense at 241.4 yards allowed per game and fifth against the pass, and close finishes have been the norm, with four of their five games settled in the last minute.
History favors the home side. Michigan leads the overall series 17-10, has won the last three meetings and is 9-4 against Penn State in Ann Arbor. It is also Homecoming weekend, and the Wolverines have won 13 straight Homecoming games. For head coach Kyle Whittingham, it is just his second game against Penn State; the first was a Rose Bowl loss in January 2023.
Injuries will be watched closely. Michigan’s Thursday night availability report was unchanged from the day before: five players ruled out, one doubtful, six questionable and a pair probable. Penn State saw two starters upgraded off its list while a starting wide receiver was added as questionable.
Both teams will file updated reports at 8 p.m. Friday and again at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, two hours before kickoff.
