News Summary

The Thorington Schoolhouse in Washington Township, Michigan, built in the 1840s, is undergoing significant renovation after sitting abandoned for nearly 70 years. With a community-driven effort, local students will lead the restoration, making it part of the newly established Thorington Park. This project aims to preserve the schoolhouse’s history while creating a vibrant space for community events, enhancing local infrastructure and honoring the township’s heritage.

Historic Schoolhouse Gets a New Lease on Life in Washington Township

There’s something magical about breathing new life into an old treasure, and that’s exactly what is happening in Washington Township, Michigan. The beloved Thorington Schoolhouse, a charming structure built in the 1840s, is making a comeback as the star attraction of the newly established Thorington Park.

From Abandonment to Abuzz

For nearly 70 years, this historic schoolhouse sat abandoned and forgotten. However, its fortunes changed recently when the decision was made to relocate it about an eighth of a mile from its original spot on Mound Road, south of 31 Mile. This move was necessary because the original property was just too small to accommodate the schoolhouse and the new park it would serve. The exciting relocation marks a significant milestone for the township, as it aims to preserve this piece of history.

Bringing the Community Together

$125,000 from its previous owner, Peg Hoonhout, with an additional $40,000 set aside for the moving operation. Robust with community spirit, local high school students are getting involved! The trades students at Romeo High School will take the reins on much of the renovation work. This collaboration is an exciting blend of government, businesses, and enthusiastic young minds ready to roll up their sleeves.

A Budget-Friendly Renovation

The plan is not just about renovation; it’s about connecting the past with the present in a tangible way.
