Novi Proposes $120 Million Public Safety Facilities Update

Modern public safety facility in Novi

News Summary

Novi is set to transform its public safety infrastructure with a proposed $120 million bond to modernize four of its five public safety buildings. The plan includes building a state-of-the-art facility for the Police and Fire Departments, along with two new fire stations. Scheduled informational meetings will keep residents informed as Novi moves toward a more efficient and safer community.

The City of Novi Proposes Major Public Safety Facilities Update

The vibrant city of Novi is on the cusp of a significant transformation in its public safety infrastructure. With the recent announcement of a proposed $120 million bond that will hit the ballot on August 5, the city aims to update, replace, and relocate four of its five public safety buildings, which have been serving the community for over 40 years.

Why the Change is Necessary

This bond, which has received a unanimous thumbs-up from the City Council, is designed to address pressing needs in both the Police and Fire Departments. Residents may be wondering why this is such an urgent matter. A lot has changed in four decades, especially in policing standards and fire safety needs. As it stands, Novi’s current public safety facilities are struggling to keep up with modern requirements and a growing workforce.

The current police station alone is home to 73 officers, 25 civilian employees, approximately 10 federal task force members, and several community volunteers. Clearly, these facilities are long overdue for a makeover.

The Plan in Motion

The crown jewel of this bond proposal is a new centralized facility that will house both the Police Department and Fire Station #1. Set to be built on Lee BeGole Drive, right near the existing police gun range, this state-of-the-art facility is estimated to cost around $91.85 million.

But that’s not all! The proposal also earmarks funds for constructing two new fire stations: one located in northeast Novi, designated as Fire Station #2, and the other in southeast Novi, to be referred to as Fire Station #3. Each of these shiny new fire stations will span approximately 14,500 square feet, coming in at about $13.15 million and $13 million respectively. Meanwhile, Fire Station #4 will remain in its original spot but will also receive around $2 million in upgrades.

Timing is Everything

Interestingly, the timing for this proposed bond could not be better. Novi is on track to become debt-free by 2026, as payments for an old library bond will soon conclude. That should ease the financial impact on residents, making it an opportune moment to invest in the infrastructure that everyone relies upon.

When residents think about their taxes, the bond will add roughly $125 to $375 annually, depending on the size of their homes. For instance, homeowners with a median property value of around $400,000 can expect an increase of about $200 per year. While this might seem like a lot, the hope is that improved public safety will lead to a safer and more efficient community.

Community Engagement is Key

Recognizing the importance of keeping residents in the loop, the city plans to host five informational meetings about the bond proposal. These gatherings are designed to educate everyone about the upcoming changes and reassure residents about how this funding will better their community.

Scheduled for May 8, June 10, June 14, June 16, and July 24, these meetings will take place at various fire stations and the police training center. Residents can expect to hear about everything from the specifics of the buildings’ needs to plans for the future of public safety in Novi.

The Need for Modern Facilities

With fire trucks getting bigger and the demand for gender-inclusive facilities rising, the current infrastructure is simply not cutting it. Local leaders have reported ongoing issues, such as privacy concerns when discussing sensitive matters in the police station and inadequate space for female firefighters. The proposed renovations and new constructions aim to address these problems head-on.

As the city gears up for these changes, the hope is that Novi residents will embrace this opportunity to enhance the safety and quality of service for all. With dedicated efforts to engage the community and provide necessary updates, this could be a pivotal moment in the city’s journey towards modernization and improved public safety.
