Born on February 22, 1947, in Madison, Nancy was the daughter of the late James Rodger and Geneva D. Higgins Singer. A lifelong resident of Jefferson County, she graduated from Deputy High School in 1964 before attending Hanover College for further studies. Nancy was a devoted member of the First Christian Church in downtown Madison, where she married her husband, William “Bill” Paul Underwood, on January 18, 1974. Together, they welcomed one son, William Robert Underwood.

Nancy’s career began at Madison Bank and Trust Company in 1966, where she started in customer service and eventually became the manager of the hilltop branch. After a commendable 45 years of dedicated service, she retired from Main Source Bank, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.

A passionate gardener and baker, she found joy in working with flowers and cultivating her garden. Beyond her professional life, Nancy was an active community volunteer, having served on the boards of Habitat for Humanity and Fairmount Cemetery, showcasing her commitment to improving her community.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband William, who passed away on September 25, 2017, as well as her parents, sister Stella Anne Wilson, and brother-in-law Richard Stringfellow. She is survived by her son William Robert Underwood and his wife Julia, who reside in Fargo, North Dakota. Additional surviving family members include sisters Johnetta Stringfellow of Plymouth, MI, Brenda Spry and Walter of Madison, IN, and Vickie Roper and Doug of Paducah, KY. Brothers Jim Singer and Robin and Charles Singer and Rhonda, both of Madison, IN, also survive her, along with several sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

The funeral services honoring Nancy’s life were held on September 4, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment took place at Fairmount Cemetery following the service. Friends and family were invited to pay their respects on September 3 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on September 4 from 9 a.m. until the service began.
