Romulus, Michigan – Series of Crashes on I-275 Result in One Fatality and Several Injuries
Two separate incidents along Interstate 275 in Romulus led to one fatality and several injuries over the weekend. Michigan State Police are currently investigating both accidents, which occurred within a day of each other.
On Sunday evening, a man was injured while standing outside his vehicle on northbound Interstate 275 near the westbound Interstate 94 ramp. The man and the drivers of a Kia and a Ford had exited their vehicles prior to the crash. A Mazda vehicle then struck the back of the Kia, causing it to collide with the Ford. As a result of this chain reaction, the man was hit by the Ford and subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported in connection with this incident, which is still under investigation.
Police have not disclosed why the drivers were outside their vehicles, but First Lieutenant Mike Shaw from the Michigan State Police emphasized the importance of remaining inside vehicles when stopped on the freeway and adhering to road rules, particularly when merging.
In a separate and fatal incident on Monday night at approximately 7:10 p.m., a 25-year-old woman lost her life in a single-car crash on southbound I-275 near W Huron River Drive. Police stated that the woman was driving a Jeep Cherokee when she reportedly lost control of her vehicle, which then crossed all lanes of traffic. It ultimately struck the center median and collided with a bridge abutment. Tragically, the driver was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, being the sole occupant of the Jeep. There were no other vehicles involved in this crash, and no additional injuries were reported. Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of her loss of control, awaiting medical examiner reports and vehicle inspections.
In another crash earlier that same day at around 1:40 a.m., a vehicle incident along northbound I-275 near I-94 resulted in one fatality and left another individual injured. The driver of a 2021 Ford Edge reportedly drove off the left side of the road, striking a concrete bridge pillar. Following the impact, the vehicle caught fire, and the front-seat passenger was ejected from the car. The driver, unable to escape the blaze, was pronounced dead at the scene. The condition of the passenger remains unknown, and investigation into this crash is ongoing.
Lieutenant Shaw reiterated the vital importance of wearing seatbelts as a precautionary measure. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant while driving, especially in busy traffic conditions, and to adhere to all road safety regulations to prevent future accidents.
The series of crashes on I-275 highlights significant safety concerns on the highways. Authorities encourage drivers to pay close attention to their surroundings, remain inside their vehicles whenever possible, and follow traffic laws to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
