Members of the Plymouth-Canton Board of Education in a meeting

News Summary

Aamina Ahmed has been appointed to the Plymouth-Canton Board of Education, filling a vacancy left by former trustee Shawn Wilson. After a rigorous selection process, Ahmed was chosen for her extensive experience and commitment to public education. Her term will run until December 2026, during which she may seek election for a permanent position. The district is also transitioning from the Chiefs mascot to the Cobras, supported by a grant from the Native American Heritage Fund.

Plymouth, Michigan – Plymouth-Canton school officials have appointed Aamina Ahmed to the Board of Education, filling the vacancy left by former Board Trustee Shawn Wilson, who resigned in August due to professional demands. The appointment occurred during a special meeting on October 1, following a rigorous selection process in which nine other applicants were considered.

A lengthy interview process culminated in Ahmed being ranked first among three finalists who were interviewed a second time. Board President Lauren Christenson expressed appreciation for the contributions of all candidates during the appointment process and expressed excitement about Ahmed’s addition to the board.

Board members noted Ahmed’s professional experience, her dedication to serving the district, and her passion for public education as significant assets. Ahmed is a parent of three children who currently attend schools within the Plymouth-Canton district, providing her with a personal stake in the community’s educational outcomes.

Moreover, Ahmed has a history of involvement with various district committees, including her participation on the Board’s Policy Committee. She is a graduate of Wayne State University and brings considerable expertise in non-profit organization management to her new role as a grant manager.

Aamina Ahmed’s appointed term will last until December 2026, at which point she may choose to run for election to retain her position on the Board of Education.

In the context of school board governance, a recent recall effort aimed at three Board members, including Wilson and Christenson, was unsuccessful. Community activists had sought to remove these members due to dissatisfaction with various board decisions, notably the retirement of the Canton High School “Chiefs” mascot. Activists collected thousands of signatures but ultimately did not meet the threshold of 16,700 signatures needed for each member’s recall.

Amid the changes, the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools district has received a grant of $145,894 from the Native American Heritage Fund. This funding will assist in covering the costs associated with transitioning from the Chiefs mascot to the Cobras mascot at Canton High School. The grant will help pay for new uniforms, logos, and other related materials necessary due to this mascot change.

The decision to retire the Chiefs mascot was made by the Board of Education in 2023, supported by a 6-1 vote, following consultations with students and staff. The mascot change was one of several issues leading to heightened scrutiny of board decisions, further inciting the recall effort against board members.

The Native American Heritage Fund has allocated nearly $484,500 to support initiatives aimed at changing or retiring inappropriate mascots across Michigan public schools. The fund has played a crucial role in aiding schools by assisting with mascot retirement and rebranding efforts for 15 institutions in recent years.

As the Plymouth-Canton schools navigate these developments, the community looks forward to Aamina Ahmed’s contributions to the Board, as well as ongoing improvements related to district governance and community engagement.
