Westland Police Investigate Vandalism at Multiple Houses of Worship and Schools

Westland, MI – Authorities in Westland are investigating a series of vandalism incidents that have impacted five houses of worship and schools over the past two months. Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible for these acts, which have caused significant concern among community leaders and residents.

At least two religious leaders from the affected institutions have expressed their sorrow over the vandalism while also calling for justice regarding the incidents. The most recent act of vandalism was reported at Our Savior Lutheran Church during the Palm Sunday weekend from April 11-13, 2023. The church, which was founded in 1961 and is located at 33333 Warren Road, was defaced with white spray paint featuring anarchist symbols and messages such as “Tax the rich or burn in hell,” alongside citations from the Bible’s Book of Timothy (Chapter 6, verses 9-10).

According to Westland Deputy Police Chief Robert Wilkie, similar graffiti incidents have occurred at several other locations, including:

  • Former St. Simon and Jude Church (32500 Palmer Road) around February 26, 2023
  • Shajara Tayyiba Islamic school and preschool (1421 S. Venoy Road) from February 27-28, 2023
  • First Baptist Church of Westland (1033 S. Wildwood Ave.) between March 9-12, 2023
  • St. Matthew Lutheran School (5885 N. Venoy Road) between March 20-21, 2023

The vandalism at St. Matthew included messages stating “no love” and pleading for assistance for the poor, notably marked on a stained glass window. Principal Daniel Burk of St. Matthew’s pointed out that he was unaware of the graffiti until a parent and student informed him. He encouraged the graffiti artist to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to property damage.

Community leaders have voiced the importance of addressing grievances through conversation instead of vandalism. In an effort to promote understanding, a couple of religious leaders from the affected institutions have offered prayers for the perpetrators, hoping that the situation can be resolved through reflection and constructive communication rather than ongoing conflict.

Authorities are actively conducting investigations into these incidents and have urged anyone with information to come forward. Community members are encouraged to assist the police by providing any details that may aid in identifying the individuals responsible for these acts of vandalism. Individuals with tips can contact the Westland Police Department at 734-722-9600 to report their information confidentially.

This series of vandalism has raised broader concerns within the Westland community about the appropriateness of expressing discontent through destructive actions. Local residents and leaders have emphasized the need for a collective effort to foster constructive conversations and to strive for understanding within a diverse and vibrant community.

As investigations continue, the Westland authorities remain hopeful that through community collaboration, they can bring those responsible for these acts to justice while also addressing the underlying issues that may drive such behavior. The residents of Westland are encouraged to unite in promoting peace and respect across all faiths and backgrounds.
