ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan goes into a noon kickoff Saturday against sixth-ranked Indiana at Michigan Stadium leaning on a freshman quarterback and a running game that finally came to life a week ago.

Tommy Carr is expected to make his first start after coming off the bench in the second half against Penn State. Carr threw only seven passes for 47 yards, but the offense changed around him: Michigan piled up 21 points and 221 yards after halftime, 174 of them on the ground, and ran for 211 yards overall, its best total this season and its first 200-yard game on the ground since November 2025.

Indiana arrives in an unfamiliar spot. The Hoosiers are coming off their first loss in more than a year and a half, a home defeat to Ohio State decided by turnovers and a receiver who could not keep a foot in bounds on the final play. Their running backs have struggled, managing 2.8 yards a carry versus the Buckeyes and just 2.4 a week earlier versus Nebraska.

Defense may decide it. Michigan ranks first nationally in yards allowed per play, though it has not seen an offense like Indiana’s. The Hoosiers, led by coach Curt Cignetti, rank ninth in points allowed per drive.

History is heavily on the home side. The Wolverines hold a 62-11 edge overall and are 36-7 against Indiana in Ann Arbor, with 22 straight home wins over the Hoosiers. Indiana has not won at Michigan Stadium since 1967, but it took the most recent meeting, 20-15 in Bloomington in 2024.

The game is the Wolverines’ 800th as a Big Ten member. Michigan is 4-2 in its last six conference games at home, and running back Jordan Marshall and receiver JJ Buchanan lead the team with four touchdowns apiece.
