WESTLAND, Mich. — An Amtrak passenger train slammed into a vehicle at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday where the tracks cross Merriman Road in Westland, a short distance south of Michigan Avenue.

None of the 136 passengers riding the train were injured, an Amtrak spokesperson said. The route runs every day between Pontiac and Chicago. Whether anyone in the vehicle was hurt had not been made clear Thursday.

Pieces of the wrecked vehicle were strewn across the crossing as police and firefighters worked the scene and looked into how the collision happened.

The Wayne Police Department shut Merriman Road in both directions at the railroad tracks until further notice and asked drivers to plan ahead and use other routes around the closure.

Commuters from Plymouth and Canton who use Merriman to reach Michigan Avenue were told to expect detours while crews cleared the crossing.
